!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! is an unspeakable tragedy. These kids are three years apart, just like my sons. Can you imagine the phone call these parents got because somebody didn’t feel like stopping? Can you imagine sending your kids to school and coming home to an empty house? It’s too much for me to think about. Please. Stop.

but that it was unclear if she would face charges in the deaths.

I mean... she ignored a stopped bus and literally ran over children. How is this unclear?

They don’t teach children to look both ways before crossing the road these days? That shit was drilled into my head by my parents, and was habit by the time I started 1st grade.

And yeah, the pickup driver should be charged with three counts of manslaughter at least.

Seems far more likely to be another case where we treat crashes as “accidents” and generally don’t punish people beyond monetary damages unless there are drugs or alcohol involved.

Agreed. We need to stop using the term “accident.” Sure, some are accidents. But most of them are “ crashes” because somebody was being negligent.

My father in law is a school bus driver so through him I have a special contempt for people go around school buses out of impatience.

My apartment complex is at the end of a short cul- de- sac. The kids wait at the driveway into the apartment complex where they are picked up. The bus stays in the cul-de-sac but as it’s very close to the driveway the law still applys. But the amount of people I see going past the bus with its stop sign out every day is incredible. I’ve been honked at before for waiting. I know I shouldn’t be, but I’m honestly shocked people are this selfish and that impatient to save like 2 minutes. Leave earlier, damn.

had an accident here that drove the point home not long ago

a lot of daycares round here use these lectric child buckets to ferry the kids around

Kinja'd!!!

went right under a train... apparantly the electromagnetic energy from the cables powering the train made it go haywire and unable to stop for the crossing (still being investigated)

4 kids dead 1 survived... childminder survived to.... shes gonna need therapy to get over that me thinks

soo yeah.... hug your kids if they still small enough to want that

a 9 year old and two 6 year olds? It doesn’t matter how many times you tell them, drill it into them, etc., they still will occasionally forget, get excited to see a friend and omit that step, be overconfident since the bus is right there with its stop arm and flashing lights, etc . I’d bet my house that you have not looked both ways every time you’ve crossed the street since you were in first grade.

It’s human nature to forget things, especially for prepubescent children. T he price for forgetting is extremely high here, especially when the children forget to look before crossing AND a truck driver forgets to stop for a school bus.

This is what happens when everybody acts like wherever they’re going is the most important trip in the world. I don’t care if you’re late for work, school, or just trying to get home. It can wait. Getting stuck in traffic behind a bus shouldn’t become a life or death scenario.

As I get older, I've lost all patience for people who drive recklessly, pass on the shoulder, cut off other drivers, etc. You're not that important, and we'd all be better off if everyone would just chill the fuck out.

I have no idea where this driver was going, but there’s no good reason to do something so unsafe just to arrive a few minutes earlier.

I'm not encouraging people to relax and not pay attention, but people need to stop being in such a rush. If it's so important, leave earlier. And if you get stuck behind a bus and it makes you late, it's ok. Just be late.

I have to think that either they’re trying to verify that first, or (more likely) they’re just trying to determine *what* to charge her with - which may depend on the results of lab tests, whether she was on the phone, etc etc etc.

Had to drive my brother-in-law to the ER once, has having trouble breathing, getting worse and worse, we made it probably just in time because he was starting to turn blue and unresponsive. So either drive the 20 minutes at normal speed to the hospital, or wait 40 minutes for the ambulance and then drive 20 minutes to the hospital.

Also had to rush home to help my dad put out a fire some asshole started on his property.  Cops never even showed up to that one, never found out who did it either.

From the relative positions of the bus, the truck that hit the kids (upper-left of image), and the trailer park where the kids lived , it looks li ke the driver was traveling the opposite direction of the bus.

Kinja'd!!! TheRealBicycleBuck > ttyymmnn
10/30/2018 at 18:32

This is where happened .

Kinja'd!!!

The bus was traveling east (northbound IN-25) and stopped about where the 25 marker is on the map. The Tacoma was traveling w est (southbound IN-25).

The road is relatively flat and the entrance to the mobile home park is almost 1/4 of a mile west of the curve on the east side of the map . The speed limit is 55mph. This is what it looks like for Southbound drivers approaching the mobile home park. The entrance is across the street from that red car.

Kinja'd!!!

The driveway where this picture was captured is 269 feet from the mobile home park entrance. At 55 mph, a car is traveling 80 feet per second. If the Tacoma driver recognized the bus was stopped when she got to this driveway, she had 3.36 seconds to get her truck stopped.

Average reaction time is about 2.3 seconds . In this time, the Tacoma covered 184 feet. That leaves 85 feet for the Tacoma to stop.

Stopping distance for an unloaded Tacoma traveling at 60 mph on a closed track driven by a professional driver is about 147 feet . If the Tacoma driver recognized the situation at the driveway above, the Tacoma should have stopped somewhere between 60 and 70 feet past the mobile home park entrance.

Kinja'd!!!

But that’s not where it stopped. The Tacoma is sitting about 145 feet past the entrance to the mobile home park.

So what really happened? I don’t know. There are a lot of factors that I can’t account for in this armchair analysis. I don’t see any skid marks either before or after the entrance. I’m not sure if that means the tires are old and lack grip or if it means the driver never really slammed on the brakes. A lot of people have never practiced panic stops and don’t know how fast their vehicle can really stop. Sometimes people panic and just don’t hit the brakes (or even hit the gas).

What I do know is that she may not have had a lot of time or distance to make decisions, so I’m going to chalk this up to a tragedy. I won’t be in line to throw any stones. I’m sure I’d feel differently if it were my kids. I have nothing by pain in my heart for them and their parents.

By the way, she’s being charged with three counts of reckless homicide and one count of passing a school bus when arm signal device is extended, causing bodily injury.

Seeing that aerial shot, I have to wonder why the bus doesn’t pull into the trailer park. I understand it would have to turn around and exit with a left turn, but having kids cross a 55mph road doesn’t seem like a very smart thing in the first place.

Thanks for all the info.

It’s becoming standard practice for bus drivers in Louisiana to block both lanes on two lane roads by turning the bus into the opposing lane. Although this you-tuber calls the practice “overealous,” I think it’s a good idea.

I don’t think so. The first time I saw a bus do it, I was a bit concerned about the driver’s intentions. After the kids boarded and the bus pulled back into its lane, I realized their intent and was ok with it.

I don’t know what’s going on in the other driver’s life or immediate situation, if they want to go faster than me, I’ll let them by and not worry about it.  I don’t spend a lot of time in residential neighborhoods though.
